Key Milestones of an Effective Job Search Strategy

Ed McCabe will present on the job search strategy, and the tactics which today's job seekers will need to land a position. Four key subjects (or tactical milestones) will be the focus of this month's presentation:

  • Determine Your Target -- the strategy of a job search;
  • Get the Message Out -- how to effectively communicate that you are looking for work;
  • Talk With the Hiring Manager -- how to impress a hiring manager in a thirty minute conversation; and
  • Interview and Cultivate Offers -- closing the deal

Our speaker, Ed McCabe, is currently Senior Consultant, Senior Trainer and Executive Job Coach at Lee Hecht Harrison, and has consulted for the firm for the past 14 years. Prior to his consulting career at Lee Hecht Harrison, Ed pursued a 35 year career with JPMorgan Chase, 27 of them in human resources, ten years of which were as Senior Vice President for Chase Bank New Jersey, responsible for Human Resources, Public Relations and Corporate Social Policy.

Ed holds an MBA in Executive Management from NYU's Stern School of Business and an undergraduate degree in Business Management from Saint Francis College, Brooklyn New York. He also completed the JPMorgan Chase Executive Seminar at Harvard University and the Advanced Program for Human Resources Executives at the University of Michigan.

Organized by

is one of Westchester County's perennial faith-based groups specifically designed to assist the unemployed, underemployed and others in a state of career transition. EARN been holding monthly meetings since 1989.

The program was established by a small group of parishioners with human resources backgrounds with the intent of educating attendees about the job search process and by providing them opportunities to develop their networking skills. Essentially, EARN's coordinators help individuals to learn what it takes to uncover job leads and to increase their number of potential contacts. Not an employment agency, EARN provides valuable resources to connect attendees to work, but does not provide job placement.

The monthly meeting has four phases. Initially, there is News You Can Use -- an update on events. This is usually followed by a knowledgeable guest speaker who delves into various aspects of the job search, such as resume preparation, networking, negotiating and interviewing. Third, a coordinator facilitates a formal networking process whereby each participant tells of his/her background, aspirations and job search successes/setbacks experienced over the last month. Finally, informal networking takes place. Attendees do a one-on-one or small group interactions, for example, depending upon what transpired in the earlier networking phase.

EARN also publishes a monthly newsletter entitled Employment Exchange which lists job openings and situations wanted.
